FASHION.

For my second discipline, I chose Fashion. I really wanted to try it out and see what all the hype was about. I was pleasantly surprised, there is a lot of work but its enjoyable.

I'm into my second week of it and I think its going to become a lot more stressful this week if I don't keep on top of the work. Last week or rather the week before last (because of rag week) we started the elective project and it basically wanted us to pick a theme from something organic like flowers or fish for example, or something fro industrial product design like speakers or a chair. I chose to do something organic and chose Shell fish. Lobsters, crabs and shrimp etc. I'm very very happy with my choice because I'm getting quite a lot out of it.

From our chosen topic we were then asked to "pull shapes" out of our sources, as many as possible. Pages and pages.  Then once a sufficient number were "pulled" we picked our favorite 2 and began dressing them on our "croquis". (The figures you dress the clothes on) We weren't really concentrating on clothes as such but rather enhancing or altering the "silhouette". Focusing on one part of the body at a time. I found this quite fun because we didn't really have any boundaries because we weren't expected to make the garments at the end! Very "avant garde" I keep hearing the word amongst the "fashion people". Wikipedia's definition below...

to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to artculture, and politics.

Last Tuesday we developed our mood boards with Liz looking at colour stories and charts and how to present them. I managed to make 4 but they still need some work.

On Wednesday with Philipa we looked at different methods of fashion illustrations and alternative ways to present our designs rather then page after page of croqui's I found this really interesting as I got the chance to incorporate collage and colour which I really love. Also on Wednesday morning we made line drawings of draping fabrics on the maniquins to develop our skills of drawings different textures and weights of fabric, I found it rather dificult at first but towards the end of the day reaped the benefits of class.

Today I brought the fabric we were asked to get. I went to Irlande on Nicolas street. I got a heavy, medium and light weight material and tomorrow will see the effect all three have when pinned on to the maniquin. And develope more ideas from them.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to upload some pictures. But for now here are some links that have inspired or interested me up to now :)
